New Hampshire's Foxes. Red and gray foxes (VIDEO)

Tuesday 04/14/2020

In my three decades as a wildlife biologist for the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department I fielded hundreds of calls about the strange screaming sounds in the night. To a person they would say "My neighbor told me it was a fishercat.". Fishercat is the most used name for our fisher. But when I mimicked the sound on the phone that they had heard they would say "That's it." Then I would tell them it was the sound of a fox not a "fishercat". So I had to learn to speak fox to communicate to these folks. It is our canids foxes and coyotes that are the night talkers. Not a fisher.
