New Hampshire's First Moose Hunt in 1988
By Eric Orff
By the early to mid eighties, the moose population had come back in significant numbers and the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department authorized the very first moose hunting season since 1901.
Nearly 32 years I was fortunate enough to be part of the first moose hunt in New Hampshire in 87 years. As a wildlife biologist for the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department I was selected to operate the Twin Mountain Fish Hatchery official moose hunter checking station. As it turned out one of the very first moose to be taken was brought in for the crew I was working with to inspect and register. It was an exciting event filled day.
