New Hampshire Nature Notes

In the midst of a summer like heat wave.

It seems like spring's warm temperatures would never get here when we were stuck with a cold rain April into early May. But how things have changed this week. The leaves did come out a week later than many years on the trees around here. I was thinking just the other day that this may be a year were the tree rings on a cut off tree would show a narrow growth year.
But just two days ago the local farmer started cutting his first crop of hay. Hay in May? So maybe despite my thoughts otherwise things are pretty much on schedule out there as far as growing. The tall grass is hiding some of the turkeys I was seeing every day. Birds are bountiful it seems. And the tree frogs I think are on their out migration from the pools where they have laid their eggs the past couple of weeks. But much to my surprise last evening at my daughters house where we gathered I could hear wood frogs quacking down back. They should have wrapped things up weeks ago. So maybe a jumbled spring of sorts.
